RRCi Sneak Peek: Interview With Juraj Hudy
The next issue of RRCi features a full build guide of the Xray XB4 2015. But we didn't stop there. We also got the opportunity to ask it's designer, Juraj Hudy some in-depth questions about the buggies ongoing development, the lengths that he and his team go to to make their products so competitive, and what cross-platform innovation has gone into features like 'Multi-Flex'.
Here's a taste:-
RRCi: You’ve now moved to a 3.5mm thick front shock tower instead of the thinner 3.0mm item that was provided in the original kit and subsequent 2014 revision. Has this been found to eliminate the need for the additional metal support plate that had been included in the older kits? How have you reinforced the rear tower assembly in order to drop the use of the metal brace in that position?
Juraj: “This is a typical example of the ongoing development based on the feedback and driver input. Despite the first XB4 including a steel brace to reinforce the shock towers, in some serious crashes several customers also broke the shock tower. To eliminate this we have changed for a thicker material which is of course stronger and at the same time we had to update the diff bulkheads to reinforce them as well. But, we then also found that the car got a little bit more stable thanks to the thicker shock towers…win-win!”
RRCi: Xray have already started to introduce optional parts for this car and as a first for the XB4 you have now bought in an optional centre differential. What are the benefits of running this over the standard slipper clutch?
Juraj: “It is pretty much an individual preference, some drivers prefer the slipper clutch some the gear diff. As we are in the high competition racing market we need to offer to customers all the tuning options possible, and the gear diff is really great in some particular track conditions which make the car more easy to handle and a little bit more predictable. But again, it is all about the personal preference. At this moment the central gear diff is available only as an option part, but if the experiences and feedback during this year show that customers prefer the gear diff instead of slipper, then you can be sure it will be incorporated into the 2016 specs car!”
